6 Month Checkup

We took Carter to his sixth month checkup today. He weighed 18 pounds, 10 ounces and was 27 ½ inches long. He was in the 75-90 percentile for height, he is going to be a tall little boy! Dr. Haney said we can begin introducing vegetables and then fruit. Since he has started to try to hold his bottle she suggested we introduce a sippy cup. Wow! He is growing up so fast, it is hard enough to believe that he is already sixth months old but now he is going to be eating and drinking like a little boy. I find myself cherishing every moment I spend with him even more.

Shanna's First Blog

This is my first time to write on our blog. I am usually behind the scenes changing out our blogs background and headers. Thanks to Meredith I was able to add photos to our header. It stays pretty busy around here between work and taking care of Carter but I am hoping to write updates about what is going on with our Carter Bear more often. Sam and I are loving parenthood. We couldn’t have asked for a better baby. It is the best seeing him grow and learn new things and his smile just melts your heart. He definitely has us wrapped around his little finger. We love him so much and are blessed to be his parents.

Carter is now five months, three weeks old. Here lately he likes is blowing bubbles with his mouth. He can turn over from his back to his stomach with ease and is trying to crawl. We are going to have our hands full once he masters crawling. He is already trying to get to his sleep sheep in his crib and other toys he likes. If he can’t reach the toy he wants he gets a little frustrated. Today we worked on sitting up without any support. He actually sat up by himself for a few seconds before losing his balance! The only thing is he didn’t want to try again he just wants to push to a standing position. He wants to stand all of the time. I am going to have to take up weight training to be able to hold him up.

About a month ago Carter began sleeping upstairs in his crib. Yes, I said upstairs. Thought I would never be ready for that transition. Sam teased that he was going to have to Ferberize me! Carter has been sleeping well in his crib at night with the exception of the past two nights. He has been waking up because he is congested, poor thing (we have had to use the snot sucker, fun…). The past week I was pleasantly surprised that he didn’t wake up to nurse at night. Not such a breakthrough for Sam since he has been getting up around twice a night to give him his paci and get him settled back to sleep. Even the amount of time spending doing that has diminished. Looking forward to when he sleeps all the way through the night.

Rainy and cold weather has come to Katy. It seems like it always gets here on the day I plan on putting lights on the house! Then it gets put off until it's too late. Not this year! We will have lights for Carter's first Christmas! Meanwhile, here's some pics from Thanksgiving at the Browns. We did Thanksgiving the way it was meant to be done, Food, Football, Nap. In that order. No exceptions.

Carter is almost 4 months old! Time flies. He's sitting up (with a little help) and talking all the time in his own baby language. He started sleeping all night last week which has been a blessing for Mom and Dad. It's amazing how awesome a good night's sleep can make you feel! Here's a few short videos:

Pumpkin Patch!

Well, we made it to the pumpkin patch for Carter's Halloween! He did really well even though it was very bright. He even got his own little pumpkin to take home. It's been really busy lately. Shanna's getting ready to go back to school Monday and has been getting prepared. Carter's growing up fast! It seems like every day he's got a new trick to show us. We had a little lapse in updates, but I'll try to be better about it!

Road Trip Weekend!

We had our first road trip with Carter and what a trip it was! He did great in the car until he got hungry. We had to stop and feed him at the Dollar General parking lot in Bastrop. Very interesting people there... Carter did get to meet all kinds of family though. This is Benjamin, my cousin Meredith's son. He's about a week younger than Carter. We also got to meet Papa Ret, Cousin Ashton, Uncle Scott and Aunt Shaunna and Zach and Brooke and the list goes on. We had big plans for Market Days in Wimberley but the Hill Country rain had other plans. We ended up relaxing around the house and watching the rain. As you can see, Carter was very comfortable! Saturday we had dinner at KK's and Papa Ret's. The food was great, but the entertainment was pathetic. Ags lost to Arkansas and looked embarrassingly bad. All in all a successful weekend!

KK came to babysit so Shanna and I could go to Warren's retirement party. It was a long drive for her for 1 night, but I don't think she minded. The best part was she worked for free!

Carter wore pants for the first time this weekend! He had them on for all of about 3 minutes before he blew out the side of his diaper. Very exciting. 6 week checkup

Carter had his 6 week appointment yesterday with Dr. Haney. He's up to 10 lbs 9 oz and 24". The doc said his ability to roll over and almost crawl was "amazing". What can I say? He comes from good stock! Shanna and I were looking at each other thinking "He's been doing that since he was 3 weeks old!".

On the down side, 6 weeks means immunization shots. Not enjoyable. Carter actually cried real tears for the first time. Very sad. He didn't even get a cartoon band-aid! No pictures today, but I"ll get some more this weekend. We're looking forward to KK and Aunt Syd visiting next weekend!

Lazy Saturday

Almost 6 weeks already? He's growing up so fast. Today is the first "guys day". Shanna had a baby shower to attend for a friend so Carter, Jake and I are hanging around the house watching some football. So far so good! This is the Winnie the Pooh outfit Shanna loves. He was her favorite as a kid.

Carter had his first real bath earlier this week! He loved the sound of the water and the feel of it... until it was time to wash his hair. He's just over a month old now nad really starting to notice things around him. We're trying to figure out who he looks like the most, but finally decided he's just a good mix of both of us. Shanna and I had our first night out since he was born last night. Saltgrass is even better on a gift card! Carter stayed with Shanna's mom ( I think we're going with Nana) and did great! We really enjoyed getting out of the house for a little while but were really happy to see him when we got back.

Well, Nursery preparations have begun for Baby Teuton. I got the crib put together with a little help from Shanna and Jake. Actually Jake just tore up the packaging paper while Shanna and I did all the work... This is probably all we'll do until March 16th when we find out the whole blue/pink thing. It's a good start though!

This is Hootie, one of the owls that lives behind our house. I"m still working on getting a better picture, but it's prett tough because he only comes out right around dusk. I have to shoot him at high ISO and low shutter speed which makes it a little fuzzy . He's still pretty impressive though. Look at those talons! His girlfriend lives in the pine tree at our neighbors house. She makes a clicking sound and he makes the good old hoot sound owls are famous for. He does a good job around the house of keeping the snakes and mice away!

This is a shot of the railroad and rice dryers on Hwy 90 in old Katy. Katy used to be one big rice field and these old dryers are all over the town. Most of them are no longer in use but many people still identify with them as part of the town.

This is my latest contest entry for the DPChallenge.com website. The contest theme was "Ending". It's the end of a train, get it? I thought it turned out pretty good. At first I didn't like the shadows on the car and building, but now I think they give the photo some depth. Katy is named for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (commonly referred to as the "K-T Railroad", now a part of Union Pacific) that ran through Katy in the 19th century. Railroads brought this town into existance and the red caboose is like the town symbol. Well, that and the damn Tigers. Katy was once known as Cane Island. The name is derived from Cane Island Creek which runs just west of downtown. Cane Creek is the creek that runs right behind our house. Cane creek got it's name because Katy was once a major sugar cane producer and rice producer. I'm not sure where the island is.

Warren had to leave the Monday before Christmas for his last shift in Russia, so we had the Brown side of the family over for Christmas a little early. Shanna's Uncle Erwin was mysteriously absent from this photo, lost in the depths of Bass Pro Shops.

Back in the USA

Well, we're back in the US, and I must admit, it's good to be home. Don't get me wrong, we loved France and Holland, but it's nice to be in a place where everyone understands what you're trying to order for dinner. Also, Amsterdam and Holland are so much more than the stereotype. It's a beautiful city with a lot of history. WE got outside of town also and caught the windmills, cheese factory and wooden shoe shop. A little touristy, sure, but still fun and interesting. The first thing that struck me about Paris was the architecture. For us in the States, a building that is 100 years old is ancient. For them it was yesterday.
One quick observation. If you want to become closer to your spouse, forget conferences and couples camps. Go with him/her to a foreign country, where few people speak English and you have no idea where you are going. You HAVE to work as a team, otherwise, you will get lost and starve! I wasn't planning on becoming closer to Shanna on this trip, but it was a happy side-effect. All-in-all, the excursion was a success. More pictures and insights to come. Stay Tuned!
